Successfully Meeting the New CACFP Nutrition Standards: Selecting, Purchasing, and Accessing Affordable Healthy Foods for CACFP Child Care and Afterschool Programs Join USDA, CACFP programs, sponsors and administrators, advocates, food banks, grocery stores, food policy experts, and others for this interactive convening. This is an opportunity to learn, explore, and discuss: USDA food procurement rules, nutrition standards, and resources; the education and training needed to facilitate programs’ and providers’ success in selecting foods consistent with the new nutrition standards (e.g., whole grains, low-sugar cereals, and yogurt) and the increased emphasis on fruit and vegetables; how stores can better serve CACFP programs and providers as the new standards take effect; ways to ensure access to affordable fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and other healthy foods needed for CACFP in low-income communities; technological innovations, including web-based CACFP tools; and addressing language, culture, and literacy in training plans and materials. 4:00pm - 6:00pm Saturday, February 24; Omni Shoreham Hotel This special session will offer interactive roundtables anchored by experts who have helped get SNAP, Disaster SNAP, school meals, summer nutrition, WIC and TEFAP resources to households and communities hit by disasters. Most federal nutrition programs are structured to respond to increases in need whether due to economic downturns and natural disasters. Attendees will hear lessons learned from Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria as well as from disasters of more modest scope. Attendees will rotate among tables for 3 rounds of 30 minutes each. The session aims to give advocates, service providers and others the information need to best aid their communities.
